3.6.2 Gantt chart shooting Schedule and Editing Timeline

3.6.1 Shooting List

3.6 Time Management

It was very difficult to keep up with time management in my group as i go to a different school to my other group members. Beacuase of this it was difficult to get together to film and edit. Also i think that me and my team members should have been more prepared for this as we all knew that this would be a problem from the start and should of come up with better soultions to the problem. Because of this me and my team members could not produce the opening sequence that we originally planned to do because of are time management. I believe that if we had managed are time better and oraganized are work i think that we would have achieved the opening sequence that we had in mind. I think that me and my team members learnt that time management is vital in getting things done.

3.5.1 Script to accompany storyboards

3.5 Storyboard of key frames

This is the first storyboard for Mr and Mrs Smythe.

This is the second storyboard for Mr and Mrs Smythe.

Evaluation and reflection of the creative process and your experience

1)I think that my opening sequence was very similar to the movie Icredibles that i analysed. I think that they are similar because Incredibles is about a family that are a typical family by day but when needed are superheros. This is similar to my opening sequence as their superhero identities are unknown.
Also the type of sound used in the Incredibles when the Incredibles logo appears is the same type of music that is used in my opening sequence when the logo TPN apperas. The type of music used makes the audience believe that something great is going to appear, this keeps the auience engaged in what they are watching, to find out what happens next.
The difference between my opening sequence and the Incredibles is that they used continuity editing a lot while my group used a lot of montage edition and shot/reverse shot.

2) My groups opening sequence represents a particiular social group very well. It represents young adults in a positive way. When i asked my audience if the felt they could relate to any of the characters in the opening sequence, none of my audience said they could relate to any of the main characters. This may have ben because the characters were a working class young couple and all of most of my audience were students.

3)The kind of media institution that might distribute my media product is Working Title Films 2. Working Title Films 2 is the smaller production team to Working Title Films which release most of the British films that are realeased in Britain. Working Title 2 are well known for their lower budget films like Shaun of the Dead and Billy Elliot.
Now that i have completed my my product, i do not agree with my original ideas. The reason why i do not agree with my original ideas as looking at the feedback from my audience it shows that most or all of my audience said they could not relate to the two main characters. I believe that they could not relate to the two main characters because of the age difference between my target audience and two main characters.
When the audience were asked if the opening sequence could be improved, half of my audience said that they did not recognise that they were superheros. When asked what they would improve in the opening sequence 3 out 4 said that the super strength and super speed that they talked about should have been shown.

4)The target audience that i had previously picked for my opening sequence was teenagers. The target audience that i had choose did not respond to the opening sequence as not one person could not relate to the two main characters. This may have been because of the age diffrence or the fact that they did not show any superhero powers that might of intrested the target audience.
Judgeing from the target audience that i had previously chossen it is plain to see that the opening sequence would have been better if it was recieved by an alternative audience. I think the target audience that could have related to the opening sequence better would have been people aged 18 and over.

5)From looking at the feedback questionnaires, when the audience was asked if they had a particular scene they liked all of my audience said that they prefered the scene where the prisoner was shown escaping form jail. I think that my audience prefered this scene as it was full of action.
I also asked my audience what was their least favourite scene and 3 out of 4 people said they did not like the scene where the two main characters where having a conversation. They said it was because they conversation seemed boring so they could not concentrate fully.
To improve my audiences response i plan to add a lot more scenes that involve action and drama as this seems to attract my target audience.

6)From shooting my opening sequence i have learnt and been introduced to a lot of new technology. For example, i learnt that placing a camera in different positions can change a shot completely or even just using a zoom button to create different shots like a wide shor or an extreme close up. The opening sequence also intoduced me to Finale cut pro, i learnt how to cut and place different scenes at differents points in the opening sequence. Even thoough finale cut pro is new to me i hope to learn how to use it properly.
I found that even though Eblogger could be annoying it was a quick and easy way i and my teacher could track how my course work was coming along. This then gave the opportunity for my teacher to track what i was doing and give me any feedback or assistance if i needed.
Me and my group used Gantt charts to scedual the times and dates that we would be filming or editing the opening sequence. Even though me and my group had a Gantt chart it was very difficult to keep up with the times and dates that we had set. This made it difficult for my group to finish the opening sequence to our best ability. This helps make sure that you stay up to date with the product and you dont lose track of time of the course work deadline.

7)I think that doing the preliminary task helped me prepare for the opening sequence as it showed me the time, effort and commitment needed to finish the opening sequence. I learnt that it is very different to get the same shot more that once and to also use a wide range of different shots as this makes the editing process much easier. I also learnt that that it is very important to be aware of your surroundings as something that does not match your mise en scene can rewin the shot. It is also very important to be aware of any backgorund noise as this could also rewin a good shot.
Looking back at my preliminary exercise i could notice a slight improvement in my opening sequence. This may have been because the preliminary exercise gave me an insight into what i should expect while shooting my opening sequence. So therefore i did not make the same mistakes i did while shooting my preliminary exercise.

3.7 Analysis of your opening sequence

Deconstruction of the titles

Relationship with sound:

I think that my group should have used sound right at the beggining of the opening sequence as this would have drwaed the audience to pay attention.
The sound used when the titles TPN are being used draws the audience in as the music used is very dramatic wich then draws the attntion of the audience.

Symbolism:

The letters TPN is used in the same way BBC is used. BBC stands for The British Broadcasting Corporation. TPN stands for The People's News which a member from my group came up with.

Technical Construction:

The letters TPN was done with Finale Cut Pro and then edited and slotted in just before the scene of the news reporter appears.

Deconstruction of the shot sequene

Shot types and framing:
  • wide shot used when news reporter is anouncing the news that a gang of prisoners have escaped jail.
  • wide shot used when news reporter shows CCTV photage of the prisoner escaping.
  • over the shoulder shots used when the two characters are having a conversation
  • wide, long shot is used to show the two characters standing in a corridor

Mise en scene:

  • plan room used with a plain backgroun to give the effect of a news room
  • modern clothes worn to show that the characters were young and hip
  • class room used when characters were having a conversation, which suggets that the characters may be students

Lighting:

  • natural sun light was used to create the effect of a bright news room
  • natural light was used when the characters were having a converstation
  • a semi dark corridor used when characters are standing side by side this gives the effect that something out of the ordinary is going to happen
Sound:

  • During the beggining of the opening sequence when the logo TPN apperars what you would hear when an american news report comes on. The sound is very dramatic which capyures the audiences attention.
  • when the news reporter is anouncing the crimes that the prisoners have commeted the sounds used before she anounces murder keeps the audience in suspence but also lets them know that someting bad is about to be said
  • the music used when the two chracters are walking through the corridor lets the audience know that they are about to do something great, this then creates suspence as the audience waits for what the two chracters are going to do

Editing:

  • Montage editing is used when it cuts from the news reporter to the prisoners escaping from jail
  • Shot/reverse shot is used when the two chracters are having a conversation
  • Visual effects is used when the two characters are walking alomg the corridor in slow motion
  • Fades is used when it moves from the news report scene to the two characters having a conversation

Studio and Marketing

Budget:

  • There was no budget as the opening sequence was done using borrowed equipment and settings
  • mise en scene like clothing were supplied by characters themselves

Audience

  • The target audience for this film are teenagers who are into superhero films. Those who watch a lot of films with action and like the thrill of suspence.

3 ways the opening sequence addresses the target audience

  1. The main characters are a young couple so the target audience can relate to them
  2. The opening sequence involves action/drama which most teenagers are attracted to
  3. It creates suspence by leaving the audience guessing of what is going to happen on the other side of the door.

3.2 Analysis of two opening sequences in your chosen genre, from two different studios

In class we watched the opening sequence of the film ''V for Vendetta'', we deconstructed the titles shown in the opening sequence, the shot sequences used, the studio and marketing used and its target audience.

Deconstruction of the tittles

Relationship with sound:

I think that the sound used in the beggining was a fine woosh which was diegetically intended accompanies flame title V.

Symbolism:

The word AV was in flames in a circle, fade in red words: FOR VENDETTA. The flames in a circle symbolize a link to the gunpowder plot and a phoenix. V is the 2nd reincarnation of the gunpowder plot. The red letters emphasize danger and anger.

Technical Construction:

The flames were probably created using CGI. A very neat construction.

Deconstruction of the shot sequence

Shot types and framing:

  • Wide shot of crowd, a focus pull to one woman in the crowd.

  • Extreme close up on the womans eyes

  • over the shoulder parrallel

  • Long shot of V and every cross cutting

Sound:

  • During company logos American old style music connotes war.

  • Non-digetic voiceover from evey (main character)

  • Foley sounds added to increase tension e.g. when chasing guy fawkes and when he is dropped in the noose.

Editing:

  • Cross - cutting of V and every underscored by TV sound bridge.

  • Opens with poetic voiceover which describes the plot as a beutiful thing, sets up the romantic ideal.

  • Eyeline match between man being hanged and the woman in the crowd.

  • The beggining of the sequence was shot in historic times of guy falks appealing to history students.

  • The fast passed chase scene of guy falks is appealing to the young audience as it is a action scene.

  • In the title sequence it tells the audience it is associated with DC comic, and this appeals to people who read these comics.

For my second shot sequence i wanted to watch a film that was ion the same genre of my continuity exercise. i decided to do the ''Incredibles''.

Deconstruction of the titles

Relationship with sound:

  • Music that is played sounds like something is going to happen starts of fast the slows down the speeds up again. This sound happens when the ''PIXAR'' logo appears.

  • A fizzing sound that fades when it goes black.

  • A sound that i would call a typical action hero sound, (like something great is going to happen) happems when the ''INCREDIBLES'' logo appears.

  • Gun shots and police car sirens.

Symbolism

  • The way the orange circle apperars first emphazies the symbol of power and emphazies the light that the letter I is givving off.

Technical construction

  • Animation is used as the film ''Incredibles'' is done in animation.

  • The I and the symbol THE INCREDIBLES is probably done by CGI.

  • Stop motion animation is used when the police car is chasing the gun shooter in the other car.

Deconstruction of the shot sequence

Shot types and framing:

  • Medium shot isn used when super heros are talking.

  • Close up is used on a super hero (frozone) is used to show his facial expressions.

  • Over the shoulder shot is used when the man with the gun is shooting at the police car.

Mise en scene:

  • The super hero costume denotes what you would especft a super hero to wear.

  • The masks are used to hide identities.

  • The black clothes and black mask that the robber is wearing is used to hide his identity from the police men.

Lighting:

  • Dim lighting is used when the super heros are talking to the screen.

  • Very low lighting is used when the police car is chasing the car to give the apperance of night time.

Sound:

  • When PIXAR logo appers, music is played in the background. The music that is played in the gives the audiene the feeling that something great is ging to happen.

  • A fizzing sound when it fades to black

  • The sound that is played when the symbol I and THE INCREDIBLES is shown is digetically intended.

Editing:

  • Cuts are used for transtioning between each scene

  • Cross cutting is used when it goes from the symbol of the incredibles to the scene where the police car is chassing the man with the gun.

Studio and Marketing

  • Budget: 92,000,000 (estimated, IMDB.com)

  • Production company: Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures

3.1 What we learnt by doing the preliminary exercise

Me and my group completed a special task for are media course work called the continuity task. The continuity task had to include a character opening a door, crossin a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he the exchange a couple of lines of dialouge. The task also had to demonstrate the following three things, match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule. The task could not be awarded any marks but 15 marks could be lost if not included in the course work. Me and my groups filming was about two students who happen to be undercover superheros who by day are boring and by night are under cover superheros. the two other members of my group did the acting while i did the filming.
During the course of the filming i learnt a lot of new things, it also introduced me to finale cut pro as i was not aware of the software before the task. During the filming of the task my group focused on the 180-degree rulse as this shot if not done correctly could change the view of the shot from the audiences point of view, i also learned how you could capture different types of shots by just using zoom on the camera, this technique also taught me the value of a good shot from differenct angles gives you a varity of choice when editing.
Even though editing and finale cut pro were just introduced to me i think with a little bit of practice it should get more comfortable with using the software.
